  1. COURSE TITLE: ADVANCE HEMODIALYSIS TRAINING PROGRAM FOR NURSES
  2. COURSE BACKGROUND:
    Hemodialysis is a renal replacement therapy done to patients with Acute and Chronic Kidney
    Disease where waste products and excess fluids are removed from the body via a filter called

“dialyzer” when the damaged kidneys are not able to adequately cleanse the blood. This is a four-
hour procedure and only certified hemodialysis nurses are allowed to perform such. With this

program, nurses are trained and will undergo comprehensive learning experience to develop them
to be expert and competent in the field of hemodialysis. This training program educate and develop
the hemodialysis nurse on all aspect in the performance of the procedure starting from hemodialysis
machine preparation, priming of the extracorporeal circuit, assessment of patient’s pre-dialysis,
connecting the patient to the hemodialysis machine, monitoring of vital signs during the procedure,
provision of immediate management when complications arises. Performance competencies will
be checked through performance evaluation tool with expected outcome on how the nurse performs
the procedure correctly and accurately. A minimum grade of at least 82% at the end of the program
(written /oral, practical test on needle insertion using the dummy arm, competency checklists) is
required prior to issuance of Certificate of Completion.

  1. KIDNEY FOUNDATION OF THE PHILIPPINES INC. DIALYSIS CENTER – BRIEF
    BACKGOUND

    The Kidney Foundation of the Philippines Inc. Renal Center.) is a non-profit organization
    established 49 years ago. It is the first dialysis facility in the Philippines founded in 1974. It delivers
    special health services to patients suffering from kidney and other related diseases with the same
    advocacy to address the increasing incidence and prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease in the
    country. Currently, the Out Patient Dialysis Center of the Kidney Foundation of the Philippines is
    located # 20 President Quezon St. Life Homes Subdivision, Rosario, Pasig City. The center caters
    ambulatory out- patient needing hemodialysis treatment. It operates from Monday to Saturday that
    starts from 5am to 5pm with two (2) shift schedule. Each treatment shift is performed by registered
    and specially trained nurses for a quality and efficient delivery of care to patients during dialysis
    procedure.
    Based on the Amended Articles of Incorporation, The Kidney Foundation of the Philippines Inc.
    was being organized with the purpose to train/assist in the training of licensed physicians, nurses
    and other health care workers to be specialists in kidney diseases in order to serve the needs of the
    people in different areas of the Philippines.
  2. COURSE DESCRIPTION
    The Advance Hemodialysis Training Program for Nurses is a combination of didactic (classroom)
    hands-on clinical experience for registered nurses who are seeking a career in the field of
    Nephrology Nursing.
    The training program is twelve weeks (12) which shall consist of:
    • One week didactic (classroom) = 40 hours
    • Eleven weeks hands-on clinical experience = 440 hours
    • Total hours of training = 480 hours
  3. METHODOLOGY
    * For the didactic phase, discussion shall be the primary method of teaching followed by question and answer portion after the lecture. Written examination shall be conducted at the end of the didactic phase to assess/evaluate the level of knowledge acquired by each individual trainee.
    * For the hands-on phase (clinical experience) trainees are expected to report 5am to 1pm for the 1st shift, 9am to 5pm for the 2nd shift. Schedule of activity shall be arranged and distributed in2 shifts to allow each trainee a chance to experience the start and end of the procedure. A preceptor shall be assigned to teach and supervise the trainee.
  4. EVALUATION OF THE TRAINEE
    The course required skills training during the clinical exposure. Each trainee is evaluated by
    Preceptor with the use of Competency Checklists. This evaluation tool shows the performance level
    that the trainee attained during the whole clinical exposure with the close supervision of the
    preceptor. A minimum passing grade of at least 82 % (oral/written examination and hand –on
    phase) is validated by the preceptor and the program manager.

    • Oral/written/Demonstration 30%
    • Clinical hands-on experience 50%
    • Attitude 10%
    • Attendance 10%

Other Requirement:
The trainee has to complete the following cases during the hands-on clinical experience with the
supervision of the preceptor.
➢ 20 cases – Cannulation of the arterio-venous fistula
➢ 20 cases – Preparation of temporary catheter (Intra-jugular, Subclavian, Femoral)
➢ 20 cases – Hemodialysis Initiation procedure
➢ 20 cases – Hemodialysis Termination procedure
The result of the trainee evaluation shall serve as a basis to determine whether the training program
has achieved its goal for the trainee and to KFP Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
activity. A Certificate of Completion shall be issued at the end of the training program.

7. EXPECTED OUTPUT
At the end of 12 weeks (480 hours), the trainee is expected to pass the written, oral and practical exams and competency performance check in the clinical area. Upon completion of the training, the graduate nurse is expected to properly and efficiently do the following:

  • Operates the hemodialysis machine safely and accurately.
  • Assess the patient condition: pre, intra and post hemodialysis procedure
  • Performs with competent ensuring quality care in the cannulation of AV Fistula and
  • preparation of temporary vascular access (Intra-jugular, Subclavian and Femoral catheter).
  • Coordinates care with the physician in the preparation and execution of the treatment plan.
  • Identifies and uses the parameters for safe and effective delivery of the treatment prescription
  • Manages complications during the hemodialysis treatment and coordinates action with the physician on duty, head nurse and preceptor.
  • Administers medication efficiently and provide therapeutic intervention during the treatment with the supervision of the preceptor/head nurse.
  • Performs the hemodialysis procedure with competency.
  • Properly documents and reports all treatment interventions done and note the outcomes.
  • Assists in conducting patient education in support of the overall treatment plan.
  • Participants is required to submits the following documents to be enrolled in the program:
  • Current PRC license ( RN)
  • Resume with picture (1×1)
  • Test result of Hepatitis profile (HbSag, anti HBS. Anti HCV)
  • Chest X Ray.
  • Swab test to determine presence COVID.
