DIALYSIS TECHNICIAN COURSE

  1. INTRODUCTION

Dialysis is a medical procedure that acts as the artificial kidney by removing waste from the blood and excess fluids from the body when the kidney fails to do so. A dialysis technician performs duties related to the renal dialysis of patients suffering from kidney failure or Chronic Kidney Disease. Also known as Hemodialysis of Nephrology Technicians.  Dialysis technicians can help make the difference between life and death as is always done under the supervision of a physician, registered nurse and senior dialysis technician either in Hospital facilities or Free Standing Dialysis Facility.

2. What does dialysis technician do?

Dialysis Technicians job entails operating the hemodialysis machine and preparing the patient prior the procedure and giving patients care during the procedure. During dialysis treatments, the dialysis technician makes certain that the dialysis machine is operating properly and the procedure is going smoothly. They clean the dialysis machine before and after each procedure.

3. What is Dialyzer reuse?

Dialyzer reuse is a practice done to patients using the same dialyzer for multiple treatments. Dialyzers are not just reused, they are reprocessed. This Reprocessing of used dialyzer is done by a trained dialysis technician in a Dialysis Facility.

The reprocessing procedure involves cleaning, testing, filling the dialyzer with sterilant, inspecting, labeling, storing, and rinsing the dialyzer before it is reused for the next patient’s dialysis treatment.

A re -use machine cleans the dialyzer   using water, treated with reverse osmosis. This water   is highly purified and cleans the dialyzer without leaving traces of particles and chemicals. The reuse machine performs pressure test and blood volume test which indicates that the dialyzer can be reused or is disposed of in the proper   manner.

The process of re- using dialyzers requires specially trained and skilled technicians to perform the    procedure efficiently and accurately for a safe dialysis treatment. Therefore, this dialysis technician training aims to teach the trainees to learn the knowledge and develop the technical skill which a dialysis technician is expected to perform in all aspects of reprocessing a dialyzer.

4. METHODOLOGY

The training is composed of 2 phases:

 a. didactic (1 day/8 hrs)

 b.  clinical exposure (19 days/ 152 hrs), a total of 60 hours ( 20 working days)
